The conf/distro/poky-atmel.conf file in meta-atmel contains the 
following line:

DISTRO_FEATURES_remove ?= "opengl wayland x11 3g nfc pulseaudio”

Switching back to the regular DISTRO = “poky” seems to have got it 
building again.
