To the first questions in each point:

(2) no
(3) yes

Sadly EMGD is a mostly-binary driver with a complicated kernel driver that
isn't supported for the kernels that we were updating to.  To use EMGD
you'll need to copy the recipes from meta-intel before they were deleted
and the corresponding kernel recipes from oe-core so the kernel portions
work correctly.
