This seems like an interesting name, where did it come from?
The term "yocto" is a prefix indicating a very small number: 10 to the -24 power, or one quadrillionth. The name was decided by committee in 2010, with some reference to the "elementary particle", which some take to mean the common thread that runs through embedded Linux development: the need for solid processes and interoperable tools.
Some interesting features of our favorite prefix:
- The rest mass of a proton is about 1.67 yoctograms.
- A yocto-Earth would weigh 13.1 pounds.
- A yoctoampere is one electron every two days.
