Just a suggestion:

In meta-raspi-light I made rt-kernel an option set in local.conf [1]
so I have to maintain sources and kernel-configs for one kernel only
(ok - offtopic: I support 4.4.x only for same reasons).

Do you think it could be a solution for meta-raspberrypi too?
