[yocto] what is the proper way to select a persistent /var/log directory?

  just used the google to dig into that, found a number of references
to an alleged VOLATILE_LOG_DIR variable, but it seems to have not been
implemented, so should i assume this is done via the fs-perms.txt
file? or how *is* it done?
