[yocto] recommended way to build rpms on centos 6 for yoctoproject?

is there an "approved" way to build rpm packages on a centos 6
system that are compatible with current yoctoproject? given the
divergence into two streams back at rpm-4.4.2. apparently one
possibility is to use that older version, which will create rpm files
compatible with both centos and yoctoproject, but is there a downside
to this?

will older rpm package formats be missing vital information? can one
install rpm5 easily on centos 6 and use that? what are the
possibilities?
