I *can* clear the LDFLAGS variable just before building modules against the kernel. That works.

I understand history makes this difficult, and this is a problem OE/Yocto wasn't originally *intended* to solve. My use case in an outlier, and I don't presume to know what "should" be done. On the other hand, I wouldn't want anyone to feel that putting those instructions in the documentation is a "tidy" solution.
