[yocto] is it expected that new users might want to run the pre-built QEMU images?

once upon a time, i did a writeup on how to run the downloadable
QEMU images from, say, here:

http://downloads.yoctoproject.org/releases/yocto/yocto-1.3.1/machines/qemu/qemuarm/

my writeup is here:

http://www.crashcourse.ca/wiki/index.php/Running_pre-built_QEMU_images

and a bunch of that got pulled into the quick start guide.

but i remember someone being fairly adamant that that wasn't what
those images were meant to be used for (i can't remember who).

so, simple question, is that in fact the point of those pre-built
images? if not, what are they meant to be used for? just curious.
