[yocto] should "hob" update the MACHINE value in my local.conf?

first time playing with hob, and i started with a fresh build
directory with no changes to local.conf, fired up "bitbake -u hob",
selected to build a core-image-miimal for qemuarm and it's currently
chugging away, but i took a quick look in local.conf and it still has
the original settings, including:

MACHINE ??= "qemux86"

i'll check again after the build is done, but should hob not update
that value based on my choice? if not, then if i drop back to the
default UI later in that same directory, won't it suddenly try to
build for qemux86?

or should i not expect to be able to mix hob and non-hob builds in
the same directory?
