[yocto] why is YOCTO_GIT_URL defined to use http?

  in documentation, curious about:

poky.ent:<!ENTITY YOCTO_GIT_URL "http://git.yoctoproject.org">

why is this entity defined to use http:// instead of git://?  if you
use http://, it doesn't work:

$ git clone http://git.yoctoproject.org/poky.git git
Cloning into git...
fatal: http://git.yoctoproject.org/poky.git/info/refs not found: did
you run git update-server-info on the server?
$
