[yocto] cannot compute suffix of object files

I'm using a pre-compiled toolchain to build my distro.  When I execute
"bitbake core-image-minimal", things fail in eglibc.

I can't tell where this "cannot compute suffix of object files" is
coming from.  Oddly, if I execute the above configure command
interactively, it works just fine.  Any ideas for me?

Perhaps the problem has something to do with incompatible versions of
the msgfmt autoconf on my host system which is Debian squeeze.
