One tiny addition:

A non-flat file layout eg. like this:

|       hardware.cfg
|       non-hardware.cfg
|     ▾ files/
|         portuxg20-preempt-rt.scc
|         portuxg20-standard.scc
|         portuxg20.cfg
|         portuxg20.scc

doesn't work!
