I do it this way in meta-kernel-dev:

http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/poky-extras/plain/meta-kernel-dev/recipes-kernel/linux/linux-yocto-dev.bbappend

In particular the protocol=file should be noticed.
