I would think inviting them join the Participant program is the best approach?

I don't remember seeing any requests to use the YP logo. However, I very, very rarely get such requests. If I discover a use in the wild, I generally only follow up if the usage is against our guidelines. It is noteworthy, though, that we decided early on not to register the YP logo trademark; we don't even use the TM although technically we could.
Is the OE logo a registered trademark? If so there is legal recourse to misuse, otherwise it's a request rather than a demand. I'm pretty sure it is not registered.

FWIW, I am unaware of either Simon Fels or anyone at snapcraft.io contacting the OpenEmbedded project for permission to use that logo. I assume that is the same for the Yocto Project.
