I would replace "core-image-minimal"  by "core-image-base" and I would
use "CORE_IMAGE_EXTRA_INSTALL +=" instead of "IMAGE_INSTALL_append"

core-image-minimal does not include firmware files, and I think they
are important for alsa-utils, as it is only a tool for audio which
uses DMA firmware.

In case you are using a Freescale reference board, you can download
the pre-built image
http://ci.ossystems.com.br/public/fsl-community-bsp/ and have a taste.
