Are you really running the console at 57600 baud?  The default
is normally 115200.  What's in your /etc/inittab?  e.g. send
the output from this command:

   # grep mxc0 /etc/inittab
    mxc0:12345:respawn:/sbin/getty -L 115200 ttymxc0
